Travel in search of the powerful Arkenstone with The LEGO Group’s The Lonely Mountain construction set. Released in 2014, this playset is part of the The Hobbit: The Battle of the Armies collection. This LEGO kit depicts a key scene from the second movie of The Hobbit film series, “The Desolation of Smaug.” These stories are part of the “The Hobbit,” a prequel to “The Lord of the Rings” books. Find the secret door with Bilbo Baggins and the Dwarves into the Erebor lair of Smaug, a dangerously intelligent dragon. Retrieving the stone is not easy because it is surrounded by endless amounts of gold and other treasures. The fearsome Smaug lives in Lonely Mountain and guards the treasure against anyone who dares attempt to take it. This enormous fire-breathing dragon moves fast, so watch out. Dig for gold in the mining area with the included special tools and accessories. Use the slide to move nuggets, and transport the gold to the forge with the sliding chain pulley and bucket. The Arkenstone is placed on the throne of Thror, but watch out for the staircase trap. In the world-famous story, Bilbo the Hobbit and the Dwarves create a plan to drive Smaug out of the Mountain. Pretend to melt the transported gold in the rotating forge. Build the giant catapult that can fire melted gold at the beast as you attempt to retrieve the treasure. This large detailed LEGO set is composed of 866 bricks and pieces used to create the mining area and lair. The Lonely Mountain features the secret door, throne of Thror, and a staircase trap with hidden treasures. Included treasures are seven golden nuggets, four melted golden nuggets, three diamonds, the key to Erebor, and The One Ring. Other accessories include a sliding chain pulley with bucket, forging area and giant rotating catapult, anvil, barrel, furnace, ladders, and torches. The mining area has two layers for hidden treasure under the brick structure. The Smaug figure is the highlight of the set with rubbery jointed wings, jointed tail, and movable legs and mouth. The wings fit into the body with a built-in shoulder joint to stay in place. The wings can also be folded together and easily extended to the full wingspan. This is helpful when posing Smaug in a flying position or when he is perched atop the play set. Details featured are translucent fire breath, scales, sharp claws, a spiky tail, and poseable joints. Measuring over 7-inches high by 18-inches long by 17-inches wide makes him all the more fearsome. The set also includes five LEGO minifigures Kili, Fili, Balin, Bilbo, and Dwalin. The mini-figures have detailed back printing and have alternate facial expressions after removing their hairpieces. Each of the characters mini-figure designs is unique to this play set. Defend these companions from the dragon with numerous weapons, including a Sting sword, three short swords, and a mace. Mining accessories include double- and singled-bladed axes, a hammer, shovel, and pick ax. The Lonely Mountain measures over 8 inches high by 16 inches wide by 4 inches deep.
